[Also in Divisions E1-E2 and F1] A locking mechanism for a motor vehicle steering shaft comprises a key operable cylinder lock 23 fixed in a housing 10 attached to the steering shaft, a bolt 51 movable from a disengaged position to an engaged position with the shaft, a spring 53 biasing the bolt 51 towards its engaged position, a sleeve 36 fitted around a rotary member 29 so that when the barrel 28 of the cylinder lock 23 is operated the bolt 51 is moved to its disengaged position by the interaction of a cam formation 31 on the rotary member 29 and a stirrup (44) on the bolt 51 and a nose 43 on sleeve 36 moves to retain an abutment 67 on bolt 51 to hold the bolt 51 in the disengaged position: when the key is withdrawn a spring 61 moves the nose 43 out of retention with abutment 67 to allow movement of the bolt 51 to its engaged position. As shown, a peg 42 on rotary member 29 cooperates with a shoulder 41 on sleeve 36 so that turning of the key causes the nose 43 to be moved over the abutment 67 until a leaf spring 62 slips over the end of the sleeve 36 and is urged by a light compression spring 64 to hold the sleeve 36 in position with the bolt 51 in its disengaged position: withdrawal of the key causes disengagement of the leaf spring 62 with the end of sleeve 36. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), a resilient blade is used in place of the leaf spring. In a further alternative arrangement, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), a lever is used in place of the leaf spring. In all these arrangements the barrel 28 of the cylinder lock 23 may be arranged to transmit drive to an operating member (not shown) of an ignition switch.
