Abstract
1,217,917. Extruding matt-surfaced tubing. T.P.T. Ltd. 2 July, 1969 [27 July, 1968], No. 35941/68. Heading B5A. The external surface of extruded plastics tubing is rendered smooth and matt by passage directly from the extrusion orifice into a metal, e.g. brass, bronze, or copper, sizing die B, the die having a continuous internal helical groove b, and pairs of concentric grooves b<SP>2</SP>, one of each pair being on the internal surface and the other on the external surface of the die, the grooves being interconnected by radial bores b<SP>3</SP>, see also Fig. 3 (not reproduced). Sizing die B is housed in a cooling chamber (D), Fig. 1 (not shown), and in operation a vacuum is applied thereto to withdraw air from the die via bores (b<SP>3</SP>) and maintain the tubing in contact with land portions (b<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 3 (not shown), between grooves b. The tubing may be of acrylonitrilebutadienes-styrene and is particularly intended for the production of slip sleeves for use in the manufacture of man-made fibres. It is stated that such sleeves when rejected may be ground and the material re-extruded.
