Abstract

1,217,771. Beading and flanging. BLECHBEARBEITUNGSMASCHINENWERK AUE. VEB. 6 March, 1968, No. 10761/68. Heading B3E. An apparatus for beading or simultaneously flanging both ends of metal cylinders, e.g. can bodies, comprises beading and flanging tools 9 circularly orbiting about a central beading and flanging cylinder 19 which is arranged for rotation eccentrically to the circular orbit of the beading tools 9 by a rockable, resiliently supported bearing 20. A can body is conveyed by a worm feed 35 between opposed beading tools 9 mounted on beading mandrels 8 which are rotated about their own axes by a driving wheel 6, keyed on a rotating tubular shaft 3, engaging pinions 7 mounted in a member 14. The tubular shaft 3 is rotated about a fixed central shaft 2 through a pinion 4 and wheel 5, and through arms 17 rotates a ring 18 on which the beading cylinder 19 is mounted. The beading mandrels 8 are mounted in the member 14 which is rotated by a driving wheel 16 to move the beading tools 9 in a circular orbit. The opposed beading tools 9 are displaced axially into the can interior by a roller 11 engaging in a stationary cam 12. As the beading tools 9 are moved in their circular path, they approach the eccentrically rotating beading cylinder 19 to cause the can to be deformed, springs 29 producing a buffer effect. After deformation, the beading tools 9 are retracted by the cam 12 and the can conveyed by a deflector 37 into a channel 38. The can ends may be simultaneously flanged by co-operating flanging surfaces 9a, 19a on the tools 9 and cylinder 19. The bearing 20 is rockably mounted on a fixed carrier 21 by a bolt 22, and eccentrically positions the beading cylinder 19 by adjusting wedge-shaped bars 23, 24. Springs 29 may likewise be adjusted by wedge-shaped bars 26, 28.
