Abstract

1,217,675. Boots, &c. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. 29 Jan., 1968 [28 Jan., 1967; 10 June, 1967], Nos. 4333/67 and 26877/67. Heading A3B. A roughing machine of the type described in Specification 1,137,254, in which a pair of rotary wire brushes 38 operate progressively along the margins of a shoe bottom, includes a pair of grinding stones 402 and means for bringing the brushes 38 into contact with the stones 402. The arms 58 which carry the brushes are supported by bars 442 (Fig. 2) which rest on the tops 80 of piston rods 78. Each bar 442 is connected to a rod 434 which can be moved by a piston and cylinder 418 via a bell-crank 426 and a lever 412, to move the brush towards and away from the grinding stone 402. A pawl (not shown) on the lever 412 also rotates a ratchet wheel 446 which is connected by gears 452, 454, 456 to the rod 434. Rotation of the rod 434 causes the bar 442 to be moved through a small distance equal to the length of wire ground away from the brush 38 so that the work engaging surface of the brush is returned to the same heightwise position. The machine also includes a control device which operates the above described mechanism after a predetermined number of cycles of the machine and also reverses the direction in which the brushes rotate when they are being ground. In a modification (Fig. 7) the grinding stone 524 is circular so that when it becomes worn it can be rotated to present an unworn working surface to the brushes 38.
