Abstract

1,217,625. Electro-chemical analysis. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. May 3, 1969, No.22668/69. Heading G1N. A solid oxygen-ion electrolyte cell (especially for analysing gases with a low oxygen partial pressure) is provided with a built-in reference gas chemical generator comprising a mixture of e. g. nickel and nickel-oxide with an anti-sintering material such as alumina or zirconia. In Fig. 3, the oxygen generating mixture is tamped into the bottom of the "electrolyte tube" 11 to cover the inner electrode and enclosed by a multilayer barrier of compacted nickel oxide alternated with nickel and stabilized zirconia, which also provides a gettering action. The tube is heated and flushed with argon before closing with a glass seal. As shown the cell is surrounded by a heater housing 23. The Specification states that a satisfactory reference can be attained by merely closing the tube above the generator mixture with a silicone rubber stopper although an extended time is required to reach equilibrium.
