Abstract

1,217,065. U.V.-fluorescent inks; uses of luminescence. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 23 April, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 19195/68. Headings C4A and C4S. An ink comprises at least one complex of a lanthanide other than lanthanum which fluoresces under U.V. radiation in a separate and unique wavelength band, and either one component of a colour-forming pair capable of reacting to form a coloured image or both components of a colour-forming pair capable of reacting in the presence of a third compound to form a coloured image, all of the components of the ink being substantially transparent to U.V. radiation. An illustrative ink contains yttrium vanadate doped with dysprosium, which luminesces in the yellow, and yttrium vanadate doped with europium, luminescing in the red. The colour-forming pair may be diazo coupling components, or the ink may contain tetrabutyl ammonium thiocyanate and a paper substrate either ferric sulphate or ferric ammonium alum.
