Abstract

1,217,053. Gas blast switches. COQ N.V. 8 April, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 16831/68. Heading H1N. In a gas blast switch of the kind in which the contacts 21, 26, during opening, first move together until the rearmost one is arrested by a stop 30, both contacts are moved by compressed gas from the extinguishing chamber and the leading contact 21 is arranged to be moved back to reclose the contacts and a blast valve after a delay. The contact 26 carries a piston 27 movable in a cylinder 25 which can be supplied with compressed SF 6 gas from a chamber 33 or vented to an outer chamber 38 by a valve 44. The contact 21 is attached to a piston 23 slidable in a cylinder 22 which can similarly be supplied with compressed gas or vented by a valve 50 operated by a piston 55. To operate the switch a rod 58 is pulled to the right to change over valve 44; the piston 27 is thus driven upwards, contact 26 pushing contact 21 before it to separate the parts 31, 32 of a blast valve. Compressed gas thus enters the contact space below piston 23 driving contact 21 to its fully open position, contact 26 being arrested by the stop. After a delay necessary to fill pipe 57 valve 50 is changed over to admit compressed gas to the inside of piston 23 so that a spring 24 recloses the contacts and valve 31, 32. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the supply to pipe 57 is obtained from the space below piston 23 allowing the rod 58 to be released earlier so that contact 26 returns to the position shown before contact 21 reaches its open position, thus causing a larger interrupting gap and preventing contact 21 striking contact 26 during reclosure and damaging the arc resistant surfaces 64, 65 which are of sintered tungsten alloy. The contacts 21, 26 do not meet in the closed position shown and connection is made through fixed contacts 29. The chamber 33 is mounted inside insulating tubes (2, 3, 4) in an earthed tank (1) the space between the tank and tubes being filled with insulating fluid (Fig. 1, not shown). The terminals 10, 11 of the switch are connected to conductors (14, 15) by contacts 5, 12, 6, 13. The blast gas passing through the nozzle contacts 21, 26 to low pressure chambers (34, 35) is recirculated through a filter (39) by a pump (40). The space 38 is preferably separated from the chambers (34, 35).
