Abstract

A device for hauling a chain 10 comprises a hand operated chain wheel 14 associated with a ratchet mechanism 22, 24, and a gate plate 32 pivotally disposed to permit the chain to pass thereunder in the hauling direction but to prevent the chain moving thereunder in the other direction. The plate 32 is pivoted at 36 to ports 34 of the device housing 12 and is movable between an abutment 38 and an adjustable back stop, the latter having one position of adjustment in which it is not engaged by the plate 32. The chain passes through a chamfered slot 42 in the base of the plate 32, in which slot a chain link is locked during movement thereof in said other direction. The pawl 24 of the ratchet mechanism may be held in the inoperative position by an adjustable head 27. The housing 12 also includes a ratchet controlled rack and pinion jack 52, 54 having a load platform 60 and a load supporting foot 68 secured to the platform by a rod 64 slidable in a guide on the housing, the latter being formed with a baseplate 63 for the device when used as a vertical jack.
