Abstract

Thermal carbon black is prepared by pyrolysing a highly aromatic (defined) liquid hydrocarbon feedstock, e.g. in a gas generator 2, in order to generate a mixture of carbon black and gas, dry separating a major proportion of the carbon black from the mixture by means, such as a gravity settling chamber 4, including at least one cyclone 6, washing the residual carbon black from the gas stream by means such as a wash box 16, spray towers 18 and dynamic scrubber 20, and mixing this washed residual carbon black downstream of the cyclone with the major proportion previously separated by e.g. incorporating the washed black in a slurry in wash box 16 and passing this slurry via surge tank 22, separating and concentrating equipment 26, spray drier 34 and air filter 36 to conveyer 14, in order to obtain a mixed thermal carbon black product.
