Oxidative lignins are prepared by treating a lignin such as a natural, isolated or denaturated lignin, with one or more of an oxidizing agent, a nitrating agent and a demethylating agent. Suitable specified lignins include protolignin, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, periodate, alkali, dioxane, hydrotropic, alcohol, phenol, acetic acid and cuproxam lignins, lignosulphonic acid, thiolignin, Brauns native lignin, Bjorkman lignin and condensed lignins such as the resinous product obtained by heating demethylated lignin or lignosulfonic acid, the macroreticular product obtained by heating lignosulphonic acid or a wood-saccharification lignin in an aqueous acid solution, the product obtained by irradiating lignin with gamma-rays, or the product of reacting lignins with methylene iodide, formalin and phenol, or formalin and dimethylamine.
