Abstract

1,159,530. Glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols. CIBA Ltd. 6 June, 1967 [6 June, 1966], No. 26105/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Glycidyl ethers of polyhydric phenols are prepared by catalytically condensing a polyhydric phenol with at least 3 mols. per hyhydroxy] equivalent of the polyhydric phenol of an epihalohydrin in the absence of water or of a reactive organic solvent; heating, for a sufficient length of time, the thus produced halohydrinether with the excess epihalohydrin present at a temperature in the range of 60‹ to 165‹ C. to form, by " trans-epoxidation," an equilibrium mixture of polyhydric phenol-poly - hydrinether, polyhydric phenol-glycidylether, epihalohydrin and glycerol-dihalohydrin for the particular temperature used, then dehydrohalogenating this equilibrium mixture by treating it with an alkali in at least a stoichiometric amount (based on the hydroxyl equivalent of the polyhydric phenol reacted) and finally removing the alkali metal halide and any excess or regenerated epihalohydrin from the desired polyhydric phenol-polyglycidylether.
