Abstract

1,215,734. Rotary furnaces. W. L. SHERWOOD. 29 April, 1968 [1 May, 1967], No. 20167/68. Heading F4B. A rotary furnace, particularly for the reduction of iron ore pellets comprises a directly driven section 1, in which solid state reduction takes place, which section is connected through a roller chain to drive a succeeding furnace melting section 2. A circumferential support member 11 around the discharge end of section 1, carries a drive sprocket 12 whilst a similar member 15 on the adjacent end of section 2 carries a driven sprocket 14. The pins 13 of the roller chain transmit the rotary drive between the sprockets to provide a connection having a limited degree of angular, lateral and longitudinal displacement between the furnace sections on rotation. Release of a single pin 13 allows the section 2 to be replaced by an alternate melting section 29 whilst it is being relined. The sections are provided with burners 30, 22. At the discharge end of section 1 within its shell are arranged a circumferential series of screens (27, Fig. 2, not shown) through which fires are discharged to refractory lined hoppers 16 mounted between circumferential support members 9 and 11 and longitudinal members 10 interconnecting them. The discharge gates 17 of these hoppers, are actuated as the furnace rotates, when their associated rollers 18 contact cam surface 19, so as to discharge the fires into a quench tank 21.
