Abstract

1,215,708. Continuous centrifugal casting. R. C. HATHORN. 21 Dec., 1967, No. 58154/67. Heading B3F. Metal 29 is poured continuously into a finned, Be-Cu mould 28 secured in a housing 24 rotated on three rolls 18 and cooled by water flowing from a stationary ring 37 so that a continuous hollow body 32 is cast centrifugally, to be withdrawn by three profiled rolls 44 and passed into a tubular support 56 bolted to the housing 24 of a length greater than the distance between the mould 28 and support 56. The water flows around fins 42 on the mould and through ducts 43 on to the casting 32. The rolls 44 are mounted in the mould housing 24 and rotated on their shafts 46 by a belt 53 via gears (47), 48, 51, 52. As the casting 32 emerges from the tube 56 it trips a switch (59) to energize a solenoid 62 operate a shearing element 61 (rotating with the tube 56) to fracture the casting. The shafts 17 of the bottom two rolls 18 (which support the housing 24) are carried by a lower portion 11 of a supporting frame 10 and one of these is driven by a chain (27) and sprocket (26) to rotate the mould assembly. A top portion 12 of the frame 10 (which can be so supported that the whole apparatus is inclined) is removable with its roll 18 so that another size of mould assembly may be substituted.
