Abstract
1,215,645. Stabilizing olefin polymers. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. 17 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23685/68. Heading C3P. An olefin polymer is stabilized against melt index or melt flow decrease by incorporating in the polymer from 0À005 to 0À3% by weight, based on the total weight of polymer and stabilizer, of one or more alkate metal nitrites. The polymer is e.g. a homopolymer of a C 2 to C 8 -l-olefin or a copolymer of two or more such olefins. One or more alkali metal bisulphites may also be incorporated in the polymer. In Example I polyethylene is blended with NaNO 2 or KNO 2 , NaHSO 3 (optional), 2,6-ditert-butyl-4-methylphenol and dilaurylthiodipropionate. NaNO 2 only is incorporated in polyethylene in Example II. In Examples III and IV NaNO 2 and NaHSO 2 are both added to polyethylene. The stabilized high density polyethylene produced in the last example in blended with a low density polyethylene.
