Printing surfaces.-A printing plate is produced by forming depressions 18, Fig. 1, in a rigid foam plastics layer 14 which is supported on a base such as 12 of tough material which limits the depth of the depression to the thickness of the layer 14. Polymers suitable for the production of a rigid foam include polyurethane, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, phenolformaldehyde, polysiloxane, and epoxy resins. The base 12 may be of metal or plastics material or may be formed for example during the moulding of the plate blank by the application of heat and pressure to one surface of the foam material so as to form, after cooling, a hard high density backing layer (26), Fig. 2 (not shown). A stylus 16, a pencil, a ball point pen, or piece of typewritten type (34), Fig. 4 (not shown), may be used to crush the foam to form a high density portion 20 along the walls of each depression. The plate produced may be an intaglio or relief plate. Before the image is formed the upper surface of the blank may be subjected to heat and pressure, Fig. 3 (not shown), or may be bonded to a smooth plastics sheet (12A), Fig. 1A (not shown). The printing plate may be used as a mould, Fig. 8 (not shown), to form a relief printing plate. Rotary intaglio printing apparatus.-A printing plate 10 according to the invention may be secured to a cylinder 40, Fig. 5, powdered material 42 being supplied to the image areas from a hopper 44 and excess powder being removed by a doctor 48. A heated plastics offset roller 50 causes the powder in the image depressions to melt and be transferred to a web 52. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the offset roller (50A) is not heated but is charged by an electrode (56) which facilitates image transfer to the offset roller. The image is transferred to the web (52) by charging the web with an opposite polarity or by heating the impression roller (54A). The plate may be mounted on a pivotable segment of a cylinder, Fig. 7 (not shown).
