Abstract
1,215,404. Process of forming sintered dispersed ThO 2 containing alloys. OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES. March 22, 1968 [March 24, 1967], No.14102/68. Heading C7D. In a process of producing sintered alloys based on Ni and/or Co and/or Fe and containing Cr, preferably 5-30% by weight and dispersed ThO 2 preferably 1-10% by weight, the powders are mixed, compacted and then sintered above 700‹ C. in an enclosure containing a hydrogen atmosphere powdered Cr and a halide, other than a fluoride, which reacts to form gaseous chromium halide which diffuses Cr into the compact. The ThO 2 powder used is preferably formed by the pyrolysis of thorium acetylacetonate at 550‹ -900‹ C which gives ThO 2 with a maximum particle size of 0À1 micron. The gaseous chromous halide preferably the chloride or bromide is formed by reaction of the Cr with NH 4 Cl, NH 4 Br, Br or Br-Cl or I-Cl. Preferably Cr granules are first reacted with the halogen in H 2 to form granules with a core of Cr and a coating of Cr halide. These granules are then used in the sintering container to supply the Cr halide vapour. The powder mixture may also contain W, Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, A1 and the sintered product may be hot rolled and then cold rolled.
