Abstract

1,214,864. Micro-hardness testing machine. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. April 3, 1968 [April 7, 1967], No.16059/68. Heading G1S. A hot micro-hardness testing machine operated through sealed apertures in a vacuum chamber 1 comprises an indenting sapphire 36 mounted in a penetrator 27 held in a refractory holder 35, 37, which holder is in turn attached to a lower part 10b of a penetrator column 10a, 10b. The two parts of the column are joined by a differential screw and nut connection 12 and the column is supported by a wire 2 and balanced from a fulcrumed counterweighted beam 3 provided with a projected optical scale 16 measuring the beam angle and load. Weights 6 form the load but are prevented from pushing down the column by an electromagnet 18 which normally holds up the column but may be adjusted to gradually lower it and load the penetrator. When the column is lowered, a spring 23 presses down on a plate 22 of a variable measuring capacitor detector, and also through an element 26 loads quartz transmission rods 11a, 11b which bear directly on the penetrator. The relative movement of capacitor plates 21, 22 give an accurate measurement of the penetration, and the zero pointer of the detector can be adjusted either by a screw and nut or electronically. Heat shields 32 and a liquid cooled block are also provided. The column may be supported by a pivoted fork 8 and the locking device 12 may be held by a sliding bolt 24 engaging a hole 24a.
