[Also in Division F2] A nut tapping machine in which nut blanks gravitate down a guide 24 from a hopper 5 to a tapping zone in which a blank lies in axial alignment with a rotary tapping tool 31 having a tap-head 32 and a curved shank 33, the blank, while being restrained against rotation, then being pushed on to and over the tap-head by a ram operated pusher 48 and the machine has a finger 94 which engages the lowermost blank in the guide and positively propels this blank into the tapping zone, the finger being moved out of engagement with the blank when the blank is moved towards the tapping tool. On propelling a blank downward a contact 88 contacts a contact 90 thereby closing a circuit for controlling the flow of compressed air to and from a ram 43. A tube 34 is driven via pulleys 38, the tube is connected to a yoke 40 which in turn drives the tapping tool via finished nuts on the shank 33. A ratchet and pawl assembly partly rotates the hopper 5 and is activated by a link 55 which is connected to an arm of a bell crank lever, the other arm of which engages the pusher 49. The hopper has a disc 7 which is engaged by a hopper agitation brake, Fig. 6 (not shown), which causes a lesser but reverse rotation to that produced by the ratchet and pawl assembly. In the tapping zone the blanks rest on pins 54, correct rotation of the blanks is achieved by a spring loaded plug positioned slightly above and to one side of the pins.
