Abstract

1,214,581. Polyhydroxyalkylamines. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 8 Feb., 1968 [9 Feb., 1967], No. 6237/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division D1] Novel N - alkyl - N - (2 - hydroxyalkyl) - polyhydroxyalkylamines of general formula where R 1 is C 8-18 alkyl which may be interrupted by an O atom; R 2 is C 6-18 alkyl; the sum of the C atoms in R 1 and R 2 being 24-36; Z is a polyhydroxyalkyl residue with 3-6 C atoms, the number of OH groups in this residue being at least half the number of C atoms; or the corresponding quaternary compounds wherein the fourth organic residue linked to N is one containing not more than 8 C atoms, are prepared by reacting a compound of general formula Z-NR 1 H with a terminal alkylene oxide having 8-20 C atoms, and, if desired, converting the product to a quaternary compound. The reaction is preferably performd with equimolar amounts of the amine and the alkylene oxide at 120-170‹ C. in the absence of oxygen and optionally in the presence of an inert solvent. In the examples N-alkyl-glucamine was heated with an equimolar amount of the alkylene oxide, Z being the polyhydroxyalkyl residue from glucose, R 1 being octyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl or a C 12-18 alkyl mixture and R 2 is a C 13-16 alkyl mixture.
