Abstract

1,214,334. Motor vehicles &c. SACHSENRING AUTOMOBILWERKE ZWICKAU VEB. 2 Feb., 1968, No. 5381/68. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F1] A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the kind comprising a three-sided piston planetarily rotatable within a casing having a bi-arcuate epitrochoidal inner periphery on which the piston corners slide and installable as a single or multiple unit in a motor vehicle, is installed with an admission duct 7, Fig. 1, curved upwardly into the vertical within the casing peripheral wall and fed by a down-draught carburetter 8 without the interposition of an induction pipe, an exhaust duct 9 curved downwardly within the casing peripheral wall such that an exhaust pipe 1 Oconnected thereto extends beneath ahorizontal line starting from the bottom of the casing, and an oil reservoir 11 at the side of the casing peripheral wall below the spark-plug 4. When mounted transversely of the vehicle, the major axis a of the epitrochoid is inclined above the centre of the epitrochoid by up to 15 degrees in relation to the vertical towards the centre of the vehicle and the spark-plug is located facing outwards of the vehicle adjacent the minor axis b. It may be mounted either at the front or the rear of the vehicle. A bracket 12 formed on the casing which carries the oil reservoir 11 also carries the engine auxiliaries 16, Fig. 3, with the exception of the engine starter. The arrangement permits a decrease in the overall dimensions of the engine, prevents the reserve of lubricant passing into the engine when the vehicle is travelling on gradients and also permits the fitting of a two-shaft gear-box 13 of the kind fitted to reciprocating I.C. engines. The engine may be installed as a multiple unit longitudinally on a vehicle without any alteration as to the positions of the admission and exhaust ducts, the oil reservoir and engine auxiliaries, a second oil reservoir in front of the bracket 12 is however fitted.
