Abstract

1,213,958. Electrostatic separators. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 22 Aug., 1969 [9 Sept., 1968], No. 41880/69. Heading B2J. An apparatus for sorting particles suspended in a liquid wherein a jet of the liquid is broken into a regular train of droplets by accoustic pulses and a senser measures a selected characteristic of each particle that passes it and causes an electrostatic charging collar to charge each droplet in accordance with the measured characteristic of any particle it may contain, the sensor comprises a nozzle element 10 constituting one electrode of stainless steel, platinum or gold, a dieletric disc 19 having an aperture 20 and recessed cavities 23, 24 and a second electrode 21 having an aperture 22 and recessed cavity 25. The two electrodes are impressed with a difference in potential to detect changes in electric conductivity as particles pass through the dielectric disc 19.
