Abstract

A cooling box, particularly for a blast furnace, comprises an inner cast steel jacket 2 and an outer cast steel jacket 1 spaced apart at the inner (hot) end and at least at the top, and bottom, mounted in a furnace wall so that the assembly has top and bottom surfaces wider than the vertical side surfaces. The water spaces 6 at the hot end and at the top and bottom of the jacket are wider than the water spaces between the vertical walls of the jacket which include upwardly and inwardly directed baffles 11. Water passages 14, 13 widen to form funnel-shaped connections to the bottom and top of the cooling box for the inlet and outlet of cooling water. A valved connection 15 to the water passage in the furnace end of the cooling box enables a damaged box to be filled with refractory material.
