Abstract

1,213,600. Testing matrix compositions. W.J. BUEHLER. Nov.3, 1967 [Nov. 4, 1966], No.47491/69. Divided out of 1, 213, 611. Heading G1S. The matrix composition of alloys consisting entirely or predominantly of a stoichiometric TiNi phase e.g. near-stoichiometric Ti Ni and Co- or Fe-containing Ti Ni ternary alloys is ascertained by determining a characteristic of the internal friction of the alloy and comparing such characteristic with predetermined values indicative of matrix composition. The method may be applied during production of the alloy by removing a sample of molten alloy from the crucible, e.g. by way of a vacuum -lock system, solidifying the sample and then measuring, for example, the temperature at which its acoustic damping properties undergo a drastic change. The latter may be performed by torsion, or by striking a suspended bar and judging by ear whether or not the bar "rings", the bar "ringing" above the transition temperature and sounding leaden-like below this temperature. The results of such test will indicate that either Ni or Ti should be added to the melt to produce the desired matrix composition in the final alloy product.
