Abstract

1,213,377. Electric motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC and ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 3 Oct., 1969 [29 Oct., 1968], No. 51249/68. Heading H2A. In a single phase synchronous electric motor having a generally cylindrical permanent magnet rotor 1, Fig. 1, surrounded by a ring of stator polepieces providing pole surfaces lying substantially in a curved surface coaxially surrounding the rotor wherein each stator polepiece provides a main pole surface 10, Fig. 3, having a major axis extending substantially parallel to the rotor axis, at least one stator polepiece additionally provides an auxiliary pole surface 11 having a major axis extending in a direction inclined to the rotor axis to enable self starting of the motor. The rotor of the motor disclosed comprises a ferrite ring 8 mounted on a plastics core 9 and peripherally magnetized to have ten poles, alternately N and S. The stator includes two magnetic material plates 4 having interdigitated peripheral polepieces, each having a main pole surface 10 and an auxiliary pole surface 11. The polepieces, of which there are five on each plate, are magnetized by an A.C. energized coil 6, the whole assembly being mounted in a magnetic material casing 7. To further improve self starting, one or more of the auxiliary pole surfaces 11 may be omitted or at least foreshortened.
