Abstract

1,212,856. Machinery guards. WILLIAM CROSLAND Ltd. 24 Sept., 1968 [27 Sept., 1967], No. 43980/67. Heading F2J. A cutting, creasing, and embossing press having a platen 11 movable towards and away from a fixed platen 24 by a drive including an electrically engaged clutch 14, includes a pivoted trip rail 25, 27 which, in the open position of the platen 11, lies adjacent the fixed platen 24 and, upon closing movement of the platen 11, is moved towards the latter, just clearing the swept arc of the platen 11, so that an operator having a part of his person so positioned that trapping thereof by the press is possible, will obstruct the trip rail to actuate a switch 35 to cause clutch disengagement and application of a brake 20 to stop the press. The trip rail, carrying transparent shields 27<SP>1</SP>, is pivoted to a plate 29 at each side, and is urged against a stop 33 on the plate by a spring 31. Pivoting of the trip rail relative to the plates 29 against the spring 31 actuates the switch 35. A shaft 21 carrying the clutch 14 output member and acted upon by the brake 20 and a "fail-safe" brake (not shown) is geared to a crank-shaft 13 coupled to the platen 11 by connecting rods 12. Links 37 connect the plates 29 to the crank-shaft for rocking thereby. Control circuits are identical to those of Specification 1,212,855 except that in place of the switch controlled by a photo-electric guard, aswitch (49), (Figs.3,4, not shown) or(60) (Fig.5, not shown) controlled by the trip rail switch 35 is used. In a modification, the trip rail 25 is supported in slots in the arms 27 so that obstruction of the trip rail moves it in the slots to actuate limit switches.
