Abstract

1,212,842. Lignins. WEYERHAEUSER CO 9 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 51093/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions A5 and C3] A substantially water insoluble polymeric compound (other than an organotin derivative of a natural polymer) comprises a pesticide moiety hydrolysably attached to a polymeric substrate so that free pesticide is releasable on hydrolysis of the polymeric compound, said polymeric substrate being a natural polymer or a derivative thereof, e.g. bark, comminuted wood, cellulose, kraft lignins, sulphite lignins, soda lignins, caustic extract of bark, tannins, corn cobs, oat hulls, bran, bagasse, fish meal, soybean flour or mixtures thereof. The polymeric compound may be obtained by forming a hydrolysable bond between a pesticide and a polymeric substrate either directly or through the medium of a polyfunctional compound capable of combining with the pesticide to form a hydrolysable bond and with the polymeric substrate, the process being effected under reaction conditions at which no degradation of pesticide occurs, the chemical bond between the pesticide and the polymeric substrate or the polyfunctional compound being more susceptible to hydrolytic cleavage than other chemical bonds in the pesticide. The hydrolysable bonds may be via the oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur of hydroxyl, sulphydryl, amino, imino, carboxyl, amido, imido, sulphonamido, sulphonimido, phosphoroamido, phosphoroimido, thiophosphoroamido, or thiophosphoroimido groups in the pesticides. The examples describe reactions wherein pesticides are first converted to acid chlorides, and reactions involving polymeric substrate/pesticide products linked via toluene diisocyanate or pyromellitic dianhydride. A long list of pesticides is given, those used in the examples being 2,4,5-T, naphthalene -1-acetic acid, 2,4-D, trichloroacetic acid, 2,2-dichloropropionic acid, 4 - amino - 3,5, - 6 - trichloropicolinic acid, 3- amino - 1,2,4 - triazole and 0,0- di - Me S - (N- methylcarbamoyl) methyl phosphorodithioate. The products of the invention find application as pesticides with controlled release rate.
