' A printing plate is made by placing a matrix to be cast from on an inclined surface, applying a liquid thermosetting resin 17 to the face of the matrix adjacent its upper edge and allowing it to flow under gravity over the face of the matrix towards its lower edge, meanwhile progressively confining, by lowering of platen 19, it at a rate not exceeding the rate of advance of the leading edge 17a of the resin. Platen 19 may be lowered quickly until it is almost in contact with the resin, then be lowered at a decreasing rate under hydraulic control from cylinder 75 to correspond with slowing of edge 17a as the resin spreads. Both platen 19 and the support on whose face the matrix is supported may act as heat-sinks for heat produced exothermically by the resin, as may top member 18, and they may be heated to a temperature below the peak temperature of the resin before casting begins. Both the platen 19 and the support for the matrix may be of 3 inch mild steel. Curing of the resin continues after platen 19 has been fully lowered and the resin completely confined. The resin used may be a polyester resin.
