Abstract
1,212,602. Strengthening glass, glass-ceramic and ceramic material. GLAVERBEL 8 Feb., 1968 [25 April, 1967; 27 April, 1967], No. 6389/68. Heading C1M. A layer of glass, glass-ceramic or ceramic material is mechanically strengthened by covering the layer either entirely or at zones which are laterally opposed with respect to a mid-surface of the base layer with molten or plastic glass which softens at a lower temperature and has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than the base layer and subsequently cooling to solidify the coating(s) and to place the coating(s) under compression. The base layer may be a sheet or a hollow tube or other hollow-ware article. The edge faces of the sheet or the rim of a tumbler and the opposed surfaces adjacent the edge or rim may be coated in this way. The molten coating may be applied as such to the layer or it may be formed in situ on the layer. The coating may be a thin sheet bonded to the base layer under pressure. The compressive stresses in the vitreous coating can be increased by a chemical tempering process involving an alkali metal ionexchange between the coating and a contacting medium. In the examples, a base glass of the following percentage by weight composition 5i0 2 : 73-08; CaO: 10-33; Na 2 O: 15-84; AS 2 O 3 : 0-15; A1 2 0 3 +Fe 2 O 3 : 0-60 is coated with one of the following glass compositions: PbO: 74, 71-5 on 70-67; B 2 0 3 : 10, 13, 15-40; ZnO: 8, 9, 9-47; 5i0 2 : 2, 3, 2À08 ; BaO: 1, 0, 0; CuO: 1, 3, 1-88; Bi 2 O 3 : 2, 0, 0; Li 2 O: 2, 0-5, 0-5 respectively. A plate of glass-ceramic of the following composition: ZnO: 42; Al 2 O 3 : 20; 5i0 2 : 35; P 2 O 5 : 3 is similarly coated.
