Abstract

1,212,556. Aerials. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 9 May, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 31412/68. Heading H4A. In a wide band slotted waveguide aerial a length of rectangular waveguide W, Fig. 2, is formed into a sinusoidal or approximately sinusoidal (e.g., with straight line portions) shape with its narrow walls lying in two parallel planes. Slots S are provided in one narrow wall which are perpendicular to the axis of the sinusoid and which may be resonant at the intended mid-frequency of operation of the aerial. Alternatively, one narrow wall of the waveguide may be constituted by a grid of wires extending perpendicularly to the axis of the sinusoid. A stacked array may comprise two or more identical aerials as described above, and their slotted faces may be coplanar, a construction being described in which a common narrow wall is provided by a sheet formed with the requisite number of parallel slots (Fig. 3, not shown). The waveguide structure may also be made in two halves machined from solid blocks and assembled together to mate along surfaces intersecting the centres of their broad walls.
