Abstract

In a method of cleaning helical flights 18 of a device such as an earth boring auger 14, a plurality of scraper discs 22 are rotatably mounted on a star-wheel 24 which has a hub 34 rotatably mounted on a spindle 40 carried by a vertical pivot member 42 which is pivotally mounted on an arm 44 of a support frame 12 and is urged, by a spring 48, to present one of the discs 22 in contact with the centre shaft of the auger 14. The latter is mounted on the frame 12 for passing down into the earth through an outer shell 20, the flights 18 being moved upward, or downward, according to the rotational sense of the auger to urge the contacting scraper disc 22 in a corresponding direction and rotate the star-wheel 24 to bring a successive one of the scraper discs into a scraping position against the flights 18. Preferably, the disc spacing approximates to the helical pitch of the auger. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the discs 22 are replaced by spring-loaded, bucket-shaped scrapers (54) which are pivotally mounted on a rotatable disc (56).
