Abstract

1374798 Sunbathing platform R OSBORNE 11 Oct 1972 [7 Dec 1971] 56875/71 Heading A4J [Also in Division H4] A platform for sunbathing is rotatable about horizontal or vertical axes to align the surface perpendicular to the sun's rays and includes means for indicating that the rays are perpendicular to the platform. The platform 15 Fig. 4 has a foot rest 16 and is mounted on an axle fitted to a yoke 12 which itself is rotatably mounted on vertical pole 11. A detector 27 consists of an array of photo-cells 31 Fig. 3, which receive a spot of light generated from the sun's rays by an apertured disc 30 mounted above. The photo-cell outputs drive reversible motors which rotate the platform and operate piston 25 to correctly position the platform. The tracking may be intermittent and includes delay devices to avoid spurious responses to clouds or momentary blocking of the sun's rays. In an alternative embodiment the photo-cells are replaced by a disc carrying concentric circles, the position of the light spot on the circles providing a purely visual indication of the alignment.
