Abstract

121,232. Hackett, H., Smith, A., and Southall, C. March 6, 1918. Packeting by wrapping-up.- Relates to machines for wrapping articles such as sweets in tin-foil &c., of the kind in which the sweet and the foil are pushed through an aperture in a disk of india-rubber or other soft body, and comprises the provision of upper and lower plungers c, d for moving the sweet, pivoted grippers p for holding the sweet, and one or more pairs q, r of slides for closing the foil against the bottom of the sweet. In the machine shown, the sweets are placed in pockets h in a table g, which is arranged under the disk a of india-rubber and is rotated intermittently by ratchet mechanism 21 to bring the pockets over the lower plunger d. Foil, passing from a roller l, is cut into lengths t by shears and carried above the pockets by a slide j. The plungers c, d are initially in the positions shown in Fig. 1, and in each cycle of operations the upper plunger c descends into contact with the sweet, and both plungers then rise to the position shown in Fig. 4, thus gripping the sweet and the foil and carrying them through the aperture in the disk a. The pivoted grippers p then close to hold the sweet, and the plunger d descends. The depending part of the foil is then pressed against the bottom of the sweet by the closing of the pairs of slides r Fig. 8, followed by the closing of the pair of slides q, which move at right-angles to the slides r; in some cases there may be a second operation of the slides g. The grippers p are then released, and plungers c, d grip the sweet and carry it to the level of a delivery trough s. The plunger c then rises to release the sweet, which is moved into the trough by a pusher carried by a lever which is actuated by a projection on the plunger c. The plungers may be rubber-tipped, and the plunger c can yield against the pressure of a spring f. The foil, passing from the roller l, is led over a tensionroller o and between a roller n and a roller m, which is actuated by ratchet mechanism 11. The grippers p are closed by a spring 28, Fig. 17, and are opened by a Y-piece 27 on a slide 26. The pairs q, r of slides are controlled by fingers 33, 34 on a rock-shaft 32. The finger 33 operates a bell-crank 35 engaging a toggle 36, which is connected to levers 37 engaging the slides r. A spring 38 returns the slides r. The finger 34 operates, by means of a rod 39, a toggle 40 which is connected to levers 41 engaging the slides q. The levers, are connected by a returning-spring 42. In the passage of the sweets along the trough s, the designs &c. on the sweets are pressed into the foil by a soft pad or presser 45, Fig. 13. The pad is secured to a rod which is pressed downwards by a spring 46 and is raised by a projection 47 on the plunger c. The machine is driven by a shaft v provided with cams 8 &c., actuating levers 2 &c. which are connected to the plungers c, d, the table j, the shears, the slide 26, the shaft 32, and the ratchet mechanisms 11, 21. A clutch x, Fig. 17, for coupling the shaft to a pulley w is operated by a handle y.
