Lids, bayonet-joints; lids secured by locks.-In closing- means of the wedging type for milk churns, containers, and vessels in which a conical portion on the lid or cover is forced against a conical seating in the neck or mouth of the churn, &c., the co-operating wedging-members are arranged on an overhanging flange of the lid and the extension of the vessel respectively. The lid is locked by a spring-pressed bolt or tooth which engages a toothed rack on the lid, and is automatically secured in the retracted position by a releasable retaining-device. As shown in. Fig. 2, the lid consists of a thin disk e fixed to a thick conical ring f adapted to fit a tapering surface c on the interior of the neck b of the churn a. The depending flange g of the part f fits over the mouth of the vessel, and is provided with inwardly projecting studs to pass through gaps j, Fig. 1, between inclines d, d<1> on the neck b. The inclines d<1> assist in raising the lid when turning it for removal, and may extend beneath the inclines d or terminate beneath the gaps j. The lock k attached to the neck of the vessel has a spring-pressed bolt l carried by a slide to engage the toothed rack m in the channel part of the lid. When the bolt is lowered by means of a thumb-piece l<1>, a spring-pressed block x, Figs. 8 and 9, engages in the head of a. T-shaped slot w in the slide, and the bolt is held in the retracted position until the block x is disengaged from the slide by pressure applied to the knob o. A card, label, or seal is inserted in grooves k<1> in front of the lock before the lid is applied to the vessel. After the lid has been tightened, access to the thumb-piece l<1> can only be obtained by defacing the cord, &c. A stud t, Fig. 1, on the face of the lock may engage a perforation in the card to prevent the card from being raised or lowered. In a modification, a ring. z, Fig. 12, rotatable on the neck of the vessel is formed or fitted with inclines d<2>, d<3> to be engaged by studs h on the flange g of the lid. Projections g<1> on the lid engage in recesses b<1> on the churn to prevent the lid from turning when the ring z is rotated. In another arrangement, a grooved ring is fitted on the lock case to receive a sealing-disk. As shown in Fig. 16, the lid comprises a stamped ring g<2> of thick metal with an inwardly-projecting flange f<2> to which is fixed a. central flanged and dished portion e<x> of flexible sheet metal. Radial notches are provided in the ring g<2> to receive a bar for turning the lid. The lock has flanges r' to engage grooves in lugs q<1> on the neck of the vessel, and is held in place by a plate s<1>, which is secured by screws s<2> and provided with a ledge s<3> to prevent displacement of the card or label.
