Abstract

[Also in Division H5] An apparatus for microwave drying the glue line 27 joining superimposed paper sheets in a strip 26 of paper pads comprises a ridged waveguide 20 having an elongated slot 21 and guide means 21a, 21b for guiding the strip 26 of pads into the slot 21. The strip 26 is perforated at 26a to give pads of the desired width. The waveguide is energized by a magnetron via a transformer and a tuner. The waveguide may have a cross-section as shown in Fig. 4 or 5 or may be circular. The ridge 25 is tapered at the outlet end of the waveguide. The waveguide is perforated at 22 and is connected to a suction source on three sides. In the transformer section (Fig. 6, not shown) there is an insert (32) which is integral with the ridge 25 and tapers from it. In use the strip 26 is passed along the slot 21 so that the glue line 27 is a region of the waveguide having the maximum microwave energy concentration.
