A smokers' device comprises a stem 5 provided with air holes 9, an extension with resiliently widenable lips 5b for holding a cigarette or like article to be smoked, and a tubular extension 5a that is normally closed from, but is communicable with, an ash receiving chamber 1. An extension 11 aids retention of the device between the smoker's teeth. The chamber 1 includes a hinged cover 15 provided with an oval aperture 15b for the insertion of cigarette stubs when the cover 15 is raised into the position shown. The cover 15 bears a resilient tongue 15c having a slot 15e that engages a projection 19a of a gate valve 19 in such manner that the valve 19 drops and closes off the chamber 1 from the extension 5a when the cover 15 is closed, provides communication between the chamber 1 and the stem 5 when the cover 15 is partly opened as shown, and disengages completely when the cover 15 is opened fully for emptying the chamber 1.
