Abstract
1,211,424. Photographic developing apparatus. KALLE A.G. May 24, 1968 [May 26, 1967], No. 24960/68. Heading G2A. A continuous process for the development of photo-printing material by a gaseous developer, e.g. development of diazotype copies by humid gaseous ammonia, has the material conducted through a closed developing chamber which is subdivided into zones of different gas pressure, the material being subjected to a pressure which first increases to a value above atmospheric pressure and then decreases to a value below atmospheric pressure. Photo-printing material 8 is guided round a perforated cylinder 7, being pressed on to the cylinder by a gas-impermeable belt 9, which is guided by rollers 10. A rotary slide body 1 provided with slides 2 rotates in the same direction as, but at a faster rate than, the cyclinder and subdivided the latter into sectors 3, 4, 5, 6 all at different pressures. Developer gas is admitted to sector 3 through a valve 13 and a pipe 14 from a storage tank 16, and gas is drawn from sector 5 through a valve 13 and pipe 15 back to the tank. Sectors 3 and 6 are at pressure below atmospheric, whilst sector 5 is above atmospheric pressure. The cylinder is formed from a rigid metal structure provided with numerous bores and lined on its inner and outer surfaces with a thin layer of perforated stainless steel. The edges of the cylinder are unperforated but covered by the gasimpermeable belt to provide a gas seal. A further endless belt may cover the belt 9 in the area corresponding to high pressure sector 9. In another embodiment, Fig.8, (not shown), a triangularly shaped rotor (34) rotates eccentrically within a chamber (36) of suitable shape, the chamber being thick walled and having 7 inset rollers (39) for guiding the photo-printing material around its outer surface, borings (37) in the chamber wall connecting the pressure sectors to the material. Heating elements may be provided to accelerate development, and exhaust devices provided to remove small amounts of ammonia which may escape from the development zones.
