Abstract

1,211,193. Head to head polymers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 26 Oct., 1967 [26 July, 1966; 29 March, 1967], Nos. 33636/66 and 14209/67. Heading C3P. Head-to-head and tail-to-tail polymers are made by reacting an unsymmetrical substituted alkene of the formula R 1 R 2 C = CR 3 R 4 , where R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl radicals and substitution products thereof, with an electron transfer agent M or M<SP>+</SP>A-, where M is an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and A- is an anion derived from a non-polar organic compound, to form a stable dicarbanion salt having either a dimeric or tetrameric structure, and subsequently reducing the salt with a halogen, electrolytically, or with a sterically hindered alkyl halide, to yield the polymer. Specified monomers are styrene, alpha-alkylstyrenes, alpha - methyl - beta - alkylstyrenes, betamethylstyrenes, 3-chlorostyrene, vinyl pyridine, 1 - vinylnaphthalene, 2 - vinylnaphthalene, and 4-vinyldiphenyl. Exemplified monomers are styrene and alpha-methylstyrene. The transfer agent may be sodium, sodium/potassium alloy, sodium naphthalene, or sodium diphenyl. An apparatus for effecting the reaction is provided.
