Abstract
1,210,841. Drawing presses. NATIONAL STEEL CORP. 2 Jan., 1968, No. 206/68. Heading B3Q. Apparatus for drawing sheet metal to form a cup-shaped container in a single-stroke operation comprises a plurality of pressure rings 30, 32, 36, including at least an inner ring 36 and an outer ring 30, for successively gripping an outer margin of a blank 24 as the operation proceeds. The rings may be mounted on and movable with a punch associated with a hollow die, or (as shown) they may be mounted on a solid die 26 co-operating with a hollow, movable punch 28. The intermediate ring 32 engages the blank, Fig. 4, before this has been drawn clear of the outer ring, which then presses against the end of the punch 28. Springs 66, 84, Fig. 7, may support the various rings, and rubber, shock absorbing cushions may be used at the pads 64, 82 and washers 68, 86. Supporting pins 60, 62, 78, 80 may be replaced by cylindrical supports with access holes, or the springs by pneumatic or hydraulic devices. The axial spacing of the rings and the forces exerted thereby are selected to apply substantially uniform pressure on the blank during drawing.
