Abstract

934,975. Flanging. CROSSHALL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. June 29, 1962, No. 24964/62. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for flanging the ends of metal drum or container bodies comprises a first series of circularly arranged forming elements adapted to fit within a drum body and to be expanded against same, a second and cooperating series of circularly arranged forming elements adapted to fit circumferentially around said drum and to be contracted there against, means for locating the drum and a fluid- operable power cylinder for effecting radially outward and inward-operative movements of the forming elements. The apparatus comprises a base frame 10 supporting a doubleacting hydraulic or pneumatic power cylinder assembly 11 and an apertured platform 13 supported by pillars 14 and which supports two coacting series of circularly arranged sectoral forming elements 15, 16 suitably guided by keyways 17. The formers 15, 16 are slidably located upon the plate 13 by ring members 35, 37 respectively. Each outer face of the formers 15 is provided with a groove 15a and each former 16 with a complementary flange 16a. A piston-rod 18 carries an adjustable frustoconical wedge member 19 and an apertured plate 23 to which is attached a ring 20 by screws 22. The ring 20 has a coniform inner face 20a which co-operates with a series of rollers 21 carried by the formers 16. Vertical movement of the rod 18 causes the formers 15, 16 to be moved radially outwardly and inwardly under the influence of the member 19 and ring 20 respectively. The formers 15, 16 are biased in their open condition by individual extension springs 31 and a garter spring 32 respectively. In operation, the drum is located on a number of adjustable blocks 30 and the piston-rod 18 actuated vertically upwards to radially operate the formers 15, 16 to reduce the diameter of the drum and form a flange x<SP>1</SP> having a diameter less than that of the drum body. The return stroke of the rod 18 is effected automatically by a stop pin 40 contacting a return valve 41.
