Abstract

1,210,804. Viscometers. COURTAULDS Ltd. March 12, 1968 [March 13, 1967], No. 11645/67. Heading G1S. A viscometer comprises a vessel 1 through which a liquid under test may be passed, a device, for example tube 12, for inserting a fluid buoyancy element such as bubble 17 at intervals into the vessel, first means 27, 28 for detecting the presence of the buoyancy element at two positions in the vessel and second means 41 for measuring the time taken for the buoyancy element to travel between the two positions. In the embodiment described the buoyancy elements in the form of air bubbles are produced by forcing air up the tube 12 until a bubble of a certain size is formed whereupon the air supply is cut off by the aduation of photo-cell 26 caused by the cutting off of the light 22 by the forming bubble. As the bubble passes photo-cell 27 a counter 41 is actuated and when the bubble passes photo-cell 28 the counter 41 is stopped, the reading thereon given a value of the viscosity. The vessel 1 is surrounded by a constant temperature bath 9. The liquid is supplied through inlets 3 to a funnel 2 which keeps the the liquid at constant head. While the test is performed valve 6 is closed to keep the liquid in the vessel static.
