Abstract
1,210,105. Evaporation of liquid from sludges and solutions. H. KOHLMANN. 5 March, 1968, No. 10583/68. Heading B1B. Clarification sludge is thickened, or a solution is concentrated, by pumping the sludge or solution through conduit. 2 and pipe coil 4 where the fluid is heated so that its viscosity is considerably reduced, and passing the hot fluid through throttle valve 6 into a vessel 5 maintained at lower pressure, wherein part of the carrier liquid (water) vaporizes. Some of the sludge or solution, collected in the lower part of vessel 5, is recycled to coil 4, the remainder being transferred by pump 7 to an evaporator wherein the material is moved down over a series of heated trays by scrapers 14 rotating on shaft 15. Thickened sludge, or concentrated -solution; is discharged from the apparatus by rotating worm 18. The trays are heated by process vapour (steam) conveyed from flash vessel 5 by conduit 8. The vapour evolved in the tray-type evaporator may be passed by blower 21 to a feed preheater (not shown). The liquid level in flash chamber 5 is maintained between levels 23 and 24, e.g. by floats; and two rotation speeds are provided for the drive of feed pump 1. The heating surface of each tray may be formed by tubes 10 of square cross-section fitted into one another, the cavities of which are in communication for the passage of the heating vapour. Alternatively, tubes of triangular cross-section may be fitted side by side, with apices upwards.
