Abstract

1,209,929. Rotary drier. AMF Inc. 22 Oct., 1968 [27 Oct., 1967], No. 48884/67. Heading F4G. A rotary drier, e.g. for tobacco, comprises a substantially horizontal cylinder, heating pipes provided along the inside surface of the cylinder for conveying heating medium, the pipes extending longitudinally of the cylinder and being formed by substantially semi-cylindrical members welded to the cylinder to be integral therewith, and a rotary union through which the heating medium is fed to and from the heating pipes. As shown, the rotary drier comprises a cylinder 1 comprising semicircular heating pipes or tubes 2 along its inside surface and paddle elements 6, each comprising a pair of interconnected heating tubes arranged between the tubes 2. Heating medium (e.g steam or hot water) is fed from the rotary manifold 10 via pipe 7 to semi-circular annulus 3 which supplies the medium via sinuous tubes 6b to paddle elements 6, from which the medium is discharged into semi-circular annulus 5 supplying the tubes 2. The medium is discharged from the tubes 2 to semi-circular annulus 4 connected to an outlet pipe 8 and manifold 10. The cylinder is supported within two track rings 29, 30 by thin strips 31, each track being carried by a pair of rollers. A sieve 14 is connected to the feed end of the cylinder 1 and contains paddles 15. The cylinder 1 and sieve 14 are enclosed in a casing 70. In use, tobacco is fed into the sieve 14 by vibrating conveyer 24 and passed through cylinder 1 where it is heated by tubes 2 and 6 and by a countercurrent stream of hot gas, a supplementary stream of hot gas being fed to exhaust hood 68 to prevent condensation in the hood and sieve.
