Abstract

<PICT:0770902/III/1> Solid particles are fed by a rotating distributer 8, which may have more than one outlet, to vertical pipes 4 arranged in a circle and containing spiral shoots 16 down which they flow to a collecting chamber 7a, while gases to be brought into contact with the particles, for cooling, heating or drying them or reacting chemically with them, pass from the chamber 7a through the pipes to an upper chamber containing the distributer 8 and from which they may be drawn through an outlet 25. The shoots 16 are spaced in sections on rods 15 suspended from levers 17 having end rollers 18 by which they can be raised, or lowered or can receive knocks (to assist the movement of the particles) by means of cams 19 on a ring 9 which is secured to the distributer 8 and is rotated, as are the rods 15, by a motor 12. There may be more than one spiral on each rod 15 and the pipes 4 may be insulated. As shown, the gases which may be at sub-atmospheric pressure, first enter a housing 1 around the pipes 4 from an inlet 20 and flow sinuously over baffles 21 around the pipes into a duct 23 to an outlet 7 for the particles so as to enter the chamber 7a. In another embodiment, particularly for treating cement dust, Fig. 3 (not shown), there is no housing and the pipes are made of ceramic material or of superimposed firebricks each with a central hole for forming part of the pipeway, Fig. 4 (not shown) and the hot treating gas flows up through a hole in the ceiling of a chamber on which the apparatus stands. The material outlet protrudes down through the middle of the ceiling hole for the material to feed to a tubular kiln. The top of the outlet being an open hopper the treating gas is able to enter the open lower ends of the pipes.
