Abstract
1,209,776. Tetrahydrocarbon Group IV metal compounds. HOUSTON CHEMICAL CORP. 14 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 51659/67. Heading C2J. Tetrahydrocarbon Group IV metal compounds, especially those of tin and lead, and in which at least one hydrocarbon group is methyl, are made by introducing an ether, lithium metal containing at least 0À1% by weight of an alkali metal other than lithium, lead metal and at least one hydrocarbon halide including a methyl halide, to a reaction zone to produce a reaction mass, the hydrocarbon halide being introduced at a rate sufficiently slow to maintain an exothermic reaction until substantially all of the lithium metal has reacted, and recovering the tetrahydrocarbon compounds from the reaction mass. Preferably the reaction is carried out below 60‹ C., and 1À5 to 20 moles of the ether solvent (e.g. an alkyl ether, THF or tetrahydropyran) are used per mole of Group IV metal used, and at least 4À4 moles of lithium are introduced to the reaction zone per mole of lead. The hydrocarbon halide may comprise a methyl halide only but may also contain, e.g. an ethyl halide and/or a vinyl halide; and the alkali metal other than lithium is e.g. sodium. The lead metal may be provided as dry powder or slurried in hydrocarbon halide, and either or both the lead and lithium may be slurried in a diluent, e.g. a liquid hydrocarbon with a normal boiling-point between 90‹ and 150‹ C.
