Abstract

1,209,566. Collapsible steering columns. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 12 May, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 23956/69. Addition to 1,159,058. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] The construction described and claimed in parent Specification is modified by the inclusion between the two members 22, 24 of a sleeve 44 in perforations of which the rollers members 40, 42 are mounted such that they are held in a predetermined spaced relation. The sleeve 44 which may be of a polyamide plastics material may be formed with a longitudinal split to aid assembly of the energy absorber. The adjacent ends of the two members 22, 24 are provided with notches (40a), 42a and scalloped shaped indentations 40b, 42b also to facilitate the initial assembly. The roller members 40, 42 may be a press-fit in the perforations or may be held in the perforations by appropriate means. When the absorber is used in a steering column (Fig. 1, not shown), the roller members at each end of the assembly comprise two pairs of members one pair on each side of the vertical plane through the column, the lower end pairs being at the lower side of the column and the upper end pairs at the upper side of the column.
