Abstract

[Also in Division H1l In a device for operating a choke valve comprising a rod 5 displaceable in a housing 1 and connectible to the valve by a wire 7, a pawl 12 mounted in the housing co-operates with teeth 9a 9e on the rod to define a plurality of rod positions and therefore valve positions. The pawl 12 is intermittently operated to allow the rod to move inwardly of the housing under the bias of the choke valve spring by an electromagnet 17 actuated by a temperature sensitive switch 25 with a bimetal coil 26 immersed in the engine cooling water. The electromagnet 17 is earthed through a conductor 20, a contact 21 on the rod 5, contact pins 23a ..... 23e and contacts 27b ..... 27e in the switch 25. A contact pin 24 is earthed through a switch 32 which is closed when the engine is operating at a speed above starter motor speed. Closure of the switch 32 operates the electromagnet 17 to raise the pawl 12 and allow the rod 5 to move inwardly until the contact 21 clears contact 23a and engages contact 23b. The pawl 12 will be operated intermittently when the coil 26 contacts the contacts 27b .... 27e with increasing cooling water temperature. With a hot engine the contacts 27b .... 27e are short-circuited by the coil 26 and if the rod 5 is pulled out it will be moved fully inwardly when the engine is started. The rod 5 may be rotated against the restraint of a spring wire 37 when stepping operation of the rod is not desired.
