Abstract

1,209,314. Foamed plastics laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 April, 1968 [17 April, 1967], No. 17530/67. Addition to 997,086. Heading B5N. In a process for the continuous manufacture of laminates in which a polyurethane reactant mixture is applied to a lower facing sheet 1 and foamed between the sheet 1 and an upper facing sheet 12 the lower facing sheet 1 is held in contact by suction with a heated supporting surface as the sheet passes from the position at which the reactant mixture is applied thereto to the position at which the upper facing sheet 12 is applied. In the machine shown for performing the process the edges 9 of a facing sheet 1 are folded upwardly to form edging strips and are supported by guide rails 8 as the facing sheet passes beneath a transversely oscillated mixing and dispensing head 10 which applies reactant mixture to the sheet 1. Whilst the mixture is applied the sheet 1 passes over heated platens 4b against which it is held by suction. The sheet 1 subse- quently passes over further heated platens 4a against which it is held by suction during expansion of the foam 11, and before the sheet 1, foam 11, and the upper facing sheet 12 enter the nip between endless belts 2, 13. Heated platens 15, 16 cause curing of the foam in its passage through the nip, and the laminate formed is cut into sections on leaving the nip. The platens 4a, 4b may be heated electrically. The support surface formed by the platens 4b, and the position of the head 10 may be longitudinally adjustable. The support surfaces formed by the platens 4a, 4b may be replaced by a single support surface heated wholly or in part. The facing sheets may be of polyethylene, P.V.C., polystyrene, paper, cardboard or asbestos paper.
