Abstract

1,209,161. Device for improving traction and limiting skidding. D. CECCUCCI. 27 Oct., 1967 [12 Jan., 1967; 15 May, 1967], No. 48865/67. Heading B7C. A device for improving traction and limiting skidding comprises a disc-like body having spring-loaded spikes mounted on its periphery, the device being attachable to a vehicle wheel by means of the same members which attach the wheel to the vehicle hub. The disc-like body may be spoked as shown, the shanks of the spikes being radially movable through holes in the rim when the spikes engage the ground. The heads of the spikes may be in the form of rectangular blocks with wedge-shaped projections on their radially outermost surfaces. The spikes may be arranged in two rows about the periphery of the rim, the spikes in one row being staggered relatively to those in the other row and the projections on the heads of the spikes in one row being arranged parallel to the wheel axis and those in the other row being arranged perpendicular thereto, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, the spikes may be provided with pins which engage in slots in spokes so that the spikes may be held in retracted positions out of contact with the ground, Figs. 19-25 (not shown). The disc-like body may be made of metal or plastics including glass fibre reinforced plastics. The device may be mounted at the side of a single wheel or between the wheels of a twin wheel assembly.
