1,208,832. Chlorinating olefin polymers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 14 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 7228/68. Heading C3P. Chlorinated olefin polymers having a chlorine content of 60 to 72 weight per cent are prepared by treating the polymer in organic solvent solution with chlorine and simultaneously with oxygen in the presence of radical formers or actinic light at 50‹ to 100‹ C., the oxygen content of the reaction mixture being 0.5 to 10 weight per cent based on the chlorine. The polymer may be of ethylene, propylene, butylene or isobutylene, optionally with vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, acrylic or methacrylic acids, or unsaturated sulphonic acids. The products may be stabilized with conventional epoxy ether and metal salt stabilizers, and are useful as lacquer binders. Examples describe the chlorination of (1) polyethylene in carbon tetrachloride in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, chlorine and air, (2) an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer in carbon tetrachloride in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile, chlorine and oxygen, (3) an ethylene/vinyl chloride copolymer in chloroform in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, chlorine and oxygen, and (4) an ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymer in carbon tetrachloride in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, chlorine and air.
