Abstract

1426838 Halogenating olefinpolymers VEBACHEMIE AG 24 July 1973 [5 Aug 1972] 35240/73 Addition to 1373805 Heading C3P In a modification of the process of Specification 1,373,805 for halogenating olefin polymers in an inert solvent by passing the polymer solution into the upper portion of a halogenating column so as to trickle downwardly therein and passing a halogenating gas upwardly through the column in counter-current flow contact with the solution, the reaction being effected at 20‹ to 60‹ C. and with a residence time of 1 to 20 minutes, the halogenating gas contains air or oxygen. The reaction is preferably initiated by light, and examples describe the halogenation of atactic polypropylene/polyethylene mixtures in carbon tetrachloride in the presence of chlorine mixed with air or oxygen.
